Description: A guitarist, singer, and songwriter of alternative country and pop music. Garu was a founding member of the Minneaplis-based band The Jayhawks, and their principal songwriter and vocalist after the departure of Mark Olson; he is often credited with the band's subsequent move from folk-country toward a more progressive, poppier sound.

Only in America could Jewish slaves in Egypt inspire White Southern Christians who in turn stirred Black Christians to sing about emancipation who in turn inspired an African-American Jewish gospel singer Joshua Nelson. Brother Moses Smote the Water teams Nelson with the Grammy-winning Klezmatics, known for their unique blend of melodic mysticism, improvisation and politically socially conscious party music for the head, heart, and tuchis.

Brother Moses Smote the Water, is a vibrant, rousing live performance of age-old Hebrew Passover songs, Nelson’s own brand of kosher gospel and traditional Yiddish Klezmatics anthems.

ZAKIR HUSSAIN'S MASTERS OF PERCUSSION

Description:

This dazzling display of drumming with virtuosos from India’s classical and folk traditions is under the direction of percussion legend Zakir Hussain, the premier tabla (kettledrums) player of his generation and one of India’s most esteemed cultural ambassadors. The artists include Manipuri Jagoi Marup, the dancing drummers of Manipur who are noted for their acrobatic choreography. Featured are tabla solos and duets, and exhilarating ensemble collaborations.

Yehoshua, Péter Esterházy, Carol Bracho, Rian Malan, Evelyn Schlag, Ian McEwan, and PEN President Francine Prose for the opening night of the 2008 World Voices festival, as some of the world's most beloved and illustrious writers peel back the layers of their literary selves in a rare group appearance.
